Summary: The doll was only ever meant to be a simple toy. An
object, a thing, with no real agency or life of his own, sewn and
stitched together with magic and flesh by a sadistic witch who preferred
playthings that bled and screamed and still remained devoted to her no
matter what she did to them. He was never supposed to be more than that.
And yet, magic is a curious thing. So is love. And when the two
combine, unexpected things can happen.

(Or: The tale of a doll who
somehow became more than the sum of his parts, and in the process
unwittingly created a family in the unlikeliest of places.)

“Real
isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that
happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just
to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.”

“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit.
“Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”
