ANYONE that says Shonen magazines don’t have enough boys that cry simply doesn’t read shonen magazines. Shonen Jumps’ entire ethos is based on effort and friendship, and the characters tend to have really strong emotions. Deku cries, Naruto cries, Luffy cries, all the fuckin JoJos cry, Kenshiro cries.
And that’s just from Shonen Jump, there are so many other series that are very mainstream with this same level of emotional maturity.
It is not at all uncommon for a character to massively break down and the other characters support them and communicate that it’s something that needs to happen, the emotion need let out.
There are a lot of iffy elements in shonen magazines but the emotional maturity of the protagonists is a constant.
The real originator of this was Hokuto No Ken / Fist of the North Star’s Kenshiro, all the way back in 1984. He showed readers that in a world that was ruled by gangs and villains trying to do more evil than each other, that it was okay to cry for those who were hurt.

Safe to say most people who don’t actually watch shonen anime and only know that it’s got action and violence and big buff men screaming and yelling are pretty ignorant of what goes on, hm?
