TIL that door knobs made out of brass automatically disinfect themselves in about 8 hours through the oligodynamic effect

via reddit.com

Fascinating. Good post.

Silver does this also, which was probably handy for silverware before antibacterial dish soap was invented.

That’s mentioned in the article as well. They also stated that a copper or silver container can disinfect a pot of water in a few hours. im gonna add a copper vessel to my emergency provisions now. @yourunclejingo you may find this stuff interesting too.

Its almost like our ancestors did shit that made sense even if they didn’t always fully understand why.

Here’s a history lesson about Robert E. Lee.
1) He was married to George Washinton’s grand daughter.
2)He served with Ulysses Grant during the Mexican American war and became a decorated war hero defending our country.
3) He believed slavery was a great evil. His wife broke the law teaching slaves to read and write.
4)After the Civil War he served with Andrew Johnson’s program of reconstruction.
5) He became very popular with the Northern states and the barracks at West point were named in his honor.
6)He was a patriotic citizen and soldier who served our country his entire life.
7) His memorial is now being called a “blight”.
No American military veteran should be treated this way.

Do we really want to emulate ISIS by destroying our historical artifacts?
8) Lee believed that States rights should be more important than the Federal Government. And that is ultimately why he choose to lead the Southern army instead of the Northern.
9) When Lee couldn’t pay his Federal taxes in person because he was serving in the Civil War the Federal Government began burying Union soldiers on his land and they are still doing that today as it is called “Arlington National Cemetary”.
1000s of our fallen soldiers of all political affiliations have been buried on Robert E. LEE’s property which is now a National monument to our fallen veterans. The Arlington Cemetary is also a Robert E. Lee monument.
Are we going to tear that down next?

Why is Korea and Japan so hostile to each other?

Japan had a nasty habit of invading Korea for around a thousand years or so and vice versa there’s probably something out there about how it all started but I don’t know how reliable it would be.

Short version is they’ve been at each others throats for as long as they’ve known about each other……less so recently tho.

England and France have been doing the same since forever, and in the last 100 years or so, they made up. What makes them so different?

Lot’s of built up hatred to the best of my knowledge. Third generation ethnic Koreans living in Japan still have a hard time because of xenophobia from stories I’ve read and such.

@northern-rebel is the closest to a Korean I know on here, so she may have some local perspective considering she lives there, and she’s fair in her assessments, so I’ll pass the question off to her for at least the Korean perspective.

Japanese imperialism seriously fucked up the WHOLE of Asia. Koreans are just an example of many because they got fucked pretty hard during that period. Iirc they weren’t even allowed to have korean names or some bizarre shit like that. Japanese people where (and still are) pretty fucked up

Definitely. And then there’s the whole thing about comfort women.

That would explain some of the current animosity for sure

The Japanese have a whole we’re-superior-to-everybody-else-especially-Koreans thing going on. Ironic, since the Japanese Islands were settled by ancient Koreans, as I recall.

God damn I guess we humans will always have something petty, huh?

Still a lot of bad blood over the last round of invasions in WWII, where the Japanese occupiers were…less than gentle.

My reading of this is that France and Britain had a common enemy twice. Whereas Japan and Korean have never had a common enemy..

Well, that and of course the fact that the wounds are a lot fresher. As in still within living memory.

While France and Britain are more the neighbors who quietly detest eachother, but not so much as to be more than jokingly hostile.

My favorite thing about Victor Hugo is that the Notre Dame Cathedral was a huge eyesore on the verge of collapsing and was planned to be demolished but Victor Hugo was like “hey 😦 I like that building” and wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame to save it. and it worked

In the book he described the cathedral in the state it was in but also in comparison to what it looked like in the 15th century before it got all fucked up in the French Revolution. His book got translated into a fuck ton of languages and was distributed all around Europe. Tourists who were fans of him would go to see it while in Paris and were appalled to see just how bad of shape it was in and it started to become stain on paris’ reputation.

So finally the king funded the Hella expensive restoration which I imagine was one really fucking gnarly project, the structure it’s self being the tip of the ice burg because of how many religious artifacts and statutes and junk that had been ruined.

So thanks Vicky that’s one hell of a beautiful tower.

So you’re telling me that we still have the Notre Dame Cathedral because of fanfiction?

yes.

“Not use collective punishment as it is not fair on the many people who did nothing and under the 1949 Geneva Conventions it is a war crime.”

Wait it’s a fucking WAR CRIME?!?! I mean that might not be 100% accurate but now I gotta know

holy crap, collective punishment is a war crime.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Geneva_Convention#Collective_punishments

and according to the exact legal phrasing-

No protected person may be punished for an offense he or she has not personally committed. Collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited.

This technically counts, as students are civilians, and thus considered a “protected person”. So yes, collective classroom punishment breaks the fourth Geneva Convention, and she should be rewarded for standing up for human rights and doing her research.

I honestly always find the term ‘spinster’ as referring to an elderly, never-married woman as funny because you know what?

Wool was a huge industry in Europe in the middle ages. It was hugely in demand, particularly broadcloth, and was a valuable trade good. A great deal of wool was owned by monasteries and landed gentry who owned the land.

And, well, the only way to spin wool into yarn to make broadcloth was by hand.

This was viewed as a feminine occupation, and below the dignity of the monks and male gentry that largely ran the trade.

So what did they do?

They hired women to spin it. And, turns out, this was a stable job that paid very well. Well enough that it was one of the few viable economic options considered ‘respectable’ outside of marriage for a woman. A spinster could earn quite a tidy salary for her art, and maintain full control over her own money, no husband required.

So, naturally, women who had little interest in marriage or men? Grabbed this opportunity with both hands and ran with it. Of course, most people didn’t get this, because All Women Want Is Husbands, Right?

So when people say ‘spinster’ as in ‘spinster aunt’, they are TRYING to conjure up an image of a little old lady who is lonely and bitter.

But what I HEAR are the smiles and laughter of a million women as they earned their own money in their own homes and controlled their own fortunes and lived life on their own terms, and damn what society expected of them.

I hope this a shit post cause that’s not even close to being true.

A large percentage of our country doesn’t know of, or care about Normandy. A few weekends ago, British artist Jamie, accompanied by numerous volunteers, took to the beaches of Normandy with rakes and stencils in hand to etch 9,000 silhouettes into the sand, representing fallen soldiers. Titled The Fallen 9000, the piece is meant as a stark visual reminder of those who died during the D-Day beach landings at Arromanches on June 6th, 1944 during WWII. The original team consisted of 60 volunteers, but as word spread nearly 500 additional local residents arrived to help with the temporary installation that lasted only a few hours before being washed away by the tide.
9,000 Fallen Soldiers Etched into the Sand on Normandy Beach to Commemorate Peace Day.
What is surprising is that nothing about this was seen here in the U.S.
Someone from overseas had a friend who sent it with a note of gratitude for what the U.S. started there. Please share with others who understand “freedom is not free – nor has it ever been”

TIL of Rosemary Kennedy. Rosemary grew into a rebellious teen so she was given a lobotomy and turned into a vegetable. During the surgery, she was asked to sing “God Bless America”, which the Doctors used to determine how deep they should cut – “when she began to become incoherent, they stopped.”

via ift.tt

You ever read some shit so evil it kinda pumps the brakes on the rest of your day?

Are you fucking ready for this knowledge? To my exasperated followers, give me a break, I haven’t given a good historical rant about her in a few months. Also who the hell uses the word ‘vegetable’ anymore? Yeah, I’m taking over this post. Here we go:

Rosemary Kennedy was JFK’s sister. Joseph Kennedy manipulated his children for years, always wanting them to be the picturesque family to help gain political traction. “Oh, they’re so pretty, oh, they’re so well-behaved, oh, they’re the definition of family ideals” that stuff.

For the most part, the rest of the Kennedy children obliged.

Rosemary?

Rosemary left her boarding school to go on dates.

…Yeah. Yeah, that was it. Rosemary left the boarding school and went on dates. That was her “rebellious nature”. She was a tad bit clumsy, she might have actually had borderline Asperger’s due to her inability to pick up on social cues, and she left her boarding school to go on dates with boys. That last one pissed off Joseph so that, by the time Rosemary was twenty-three (the above cruce post makes it seem like she was a teenager but no, she was twenty-three, I’m not saying this to diminish anything, I’m saying that she was a fully-grown adult and still under her father’s manipulations), he took her to Walter Jackson Freeman without consulting his wife. If you haven’t been privy to any of my rants, Walter Jackson Freeman was a man who used icepicks and knives to cut into people’s heads, chopping off pieces of their brain, a process known as the frontal lobotomy. Icepicks. The things you used to chip ice. Icepicks. Although I’m pretty sure he used a kitchen knife on Rosemary because, you know, that’s so much better. Anywho, not only was she forced into the operation, not only was she forced to sing God Bless America, but she was forced to say The Lord’s Prayer. The. Lord’s. Prayer. Until. She. Couldn’t. Because. They. Paralyzed. Her.

Joseph was so disgusted by her new state (you know, because she was paralyzed) that he sent her to a far-off asylum where she remained for decades. When JFK ran for his presidency and was asked about the whereabouts of his sister, he said that she was away, teaching and/or studying.

Nobody visited Rosemary for decades.

Nobody visited Rosemary for decades.

When her mother finally visited, Rosemary lunged at her in anger and had to be sedated. Her mother’s response? You ready for this? I mean, seriously, are you ready? Like I know what you’re thinking: “Mate, you just went into a rant by memory (yeah, I’m typing this all by memory) about a woman whose brain was hacked up using a butter knife so that she wouldn’t embarrass her family during their political campaign, only for that woman to become paralyzed and institutionalized without visitors for decades, what the fuck can be worse than that?” Seriously though, brace yourselves.

When Rose Kennedy saw her daughter for the first time in decades (after Rosemary was institutionalized as a result of Joseph’s severe medical abuse), when Rose saw her…her first concern…was that she was fat.

Like I said, I wrote this all from memory, but have a bundle of sources confirming everything:

http://people.com/books/untold-story-of-rosemary-kennedy-and-her-disastrous-lobotomy/

The family that thought it was more important to get a story straight than go back and get a woman out of a car in a lake AND the family that thought it was better to work with the Russians and the media to sabotage Reagan than lose to him again in an election

@patron-saint-of-smart-asses it got fucking worse.

She also may have been sexually abused according to this book I have, and the lobotomy was to prevent her from ruining Joseph’s reputation.

AND the original source of a lot her her mental problems pre-lobotomy may have been the result of a dumbass nurse who physically forced her head to stay in the birth canal, depriving her of oxygen, because she didn’t want to deliver the baby without a physician on hand. This poor girl was was screwed up from the beginning.

The Kennedys are in Hell confirmed

@libertarirynn was that sort of thing (the Birth thing) common back then?

also,

Speaking As An Atheist:

Demons are real.

I don’t believe it was common but I’m not 100% on that.

Want to know another Kennedy “fun“ fact? Joe Jr. the eldest son praised Hitler’s forced sterilization policy “as a great thing” that “will do away with many of the disgusting specimens of men.” I could seriously go on and on about how awful these people were. Although I will say that in some ways Rosemary got the last laugh, because she did eventually learn to walk and talk somewhat again and lived into her 80s. In fact in 2005 she became the *first* Kennedy child to die of natural causes.

This is why I hate it when I see Catholics glorify the Kennedys as the first political Catholic entity. They are garbage.
