This is apparently coming out in 3 days.

In 3 days, I’m going to start to be a total jogging addict, I think

I’ve been beta testing it and I can confirm it’s actually the greatest app ever. Full iOS release date is as specified, Android release this Spring.

It’s so intense, at one point during the first mission when radio contact was lost, I could hear them trying to contact me “Can you hear us?!” and I literally grabbed the mic and shouted, “I CAN HEAR YOU WHAT DO I DO?” even though that’s not how it works.

I’m just glad nobody was near me.

Alright yall sit your asses down I’m telling you a story

I have this app and it is one of my best purchases I’ve ever had. It endorses your running and makes you work.

The only downside is that it is fucking terrifying. One time, I was running, and got surrounded by zombies. Groaning and shuffling from all angles. And I have never ran that fast in my entire life. I completed my course(which usually takes 15 mins) in 5. I was also screaming a bit. I got some really weird looks, too.

So, morale of the story: This is a fucking scary app and I recommend it 100%.

HEY SIT YO ASSES DOWN LET’S CHAT ABOUT WHAT A GREAT APP THIS IS.

I’ve had this app for, what, two years now? Yeah. Two years.

Literally the best investment of my life. Yes, better than SAT tutors, personal fitness training, college, and art class, though these are all things that are important and helped me take steps towards being awesome. But this app might be literally saving my ass.

So first I downloaded the Zombies, Run! app on the Android. What does this app have? And the above stories are true – you can set your app to a GPS chase (or accelerometer but that’s really annoying because phones aren’t built for that) and zombies will chase you. And they’re groaning over your music and everything.

But what changed my life for the better was the Zombies, Run! 5k training app, only $2.

THAT’S RIGHT, AN 8-WEEK COUCH-TO-5K TRAINING, THEMED IN THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, FOR ONLY TWO FUCKING DOLLARS.

You don’t even need the original app. But the original app’s storyline enhances this one, and vice versa.

Now, you might be like, what? That can’t be right. Pay $2 to train for a 5k in the course of only two months? HELL FUCKIN’ YEAH YOU HEARD ME RIGHT.

image

This is me being a massive lonely nerdass at the Color Me Rad a month ago. Granted, that race had more hills than I cared for (I trained on a flat boardwalk), but I still ran. And before that, only halfway through the program, I ran the Electric Run 5k with my also-nerdass boyfriend. Yeah, ran it. Hell yeah.

And I clocked in a 11:41 mile yesterday on the treadmill. A year ago I couldn’t even run for more than a minute without wanting to stop and roll over off the boardwalk onto the beach.

And what’s better: I’m seeing my blood sugar levels drop. Yeah, I’m diabetic, and this is actually helping my fat diabetic ass. So along with a better diet and a totally rad EDM playlist, this game is literally saving me. It’s helping me get up, get active, and finally start loving to run.

Okay, but enough about me.

What else does this game have that you should 100% get behind?

  • Indie developers!
  • …that actually respond to their players!
  • Canon queer representation!
  • Canon diversity!
  • Continued content!
  • An AWESOME community!
  • DID I ALREADY MENTION CANON QUEER AND RACIAL REPRESENTATION!?
  • Continuously updated content!

They’ve been recognized by all sorts of British media, and after this app got big, Six To Start was funded by the British government to help develop an app for walkers!

This is literally one of the best apps on the market.

Please support this app for awesome INDIE APPS, FUN FITNESS, AND REPRESENTATION

welp guess i know what i’m downloading once wisconsin’s weather makeS UP ITS FREAKIN MIND-

“If autism isn’t caused by environmental factors and is natural why didn’t we ever see it in the past?”

We did, except it wasn’t called autism it was called “Little Jonathan is a r*tarded halfwit who bangs his head on things and can’t speak so we’re taking him into the middle of the cold dark forest and leaving him there to die.”

Or “little Jonathan doesn’t talk but does a good job herding the sheep, contributes to the community in his own way, and is, all around, a decent guy.” That happened a lot, too, especially before the 19th century.

Or, backing up FURTHER

and lots of people think this very likely,

“Oh little Sionnat has obviously been taken by the fairies and they’ve left us a Changeling Child who knows too much, and asks strange questions, and uses words she shouldn’t know, and watches everything with her big dark eyes, clearly a Fairy Child and not a Human Like Us.”

The Myth of the Changeling child, a human baby apparently replaced at a young age by a toddler who “suddenly” acts “strange and fey” is an almost textbook depiction of autistic children.

To this day, “autism warrior mommies” talk about autism “stealing” their “sweet normal child” and have this idea of “getting their real baby back” which (in the face of modern science)  indicates how the human psyche actually does deal with finding out their kid acts unlike what they expected.

Given this evidence, and how common we now know autism actually is, the Changeling myth is almost definitely the result of people’s confusion at the development of autistic children.

Weirdly enough, that legend is now comforting to me.

I think it’s worth noting that many like me, who are diagnosed with ASD now, would probably have been seen as just a bit odd in centuries past. I’m only a little bit autistic; I can pass for neurotypical for short periods if I work really hard at it. I have a lack of talent in social situations, and I’m prone to sensory overload or you might notice me stimming.

But here’s the thing: life is louder, brighter and more intense and confusing than it has ever been. I live on the edge of London and I rarely go into the centre of town because it’s too overwhelming. If I went back in time and lived on a farm somewhere, would anyone even notice there was anything odd about me? No police sirens, no crowded streets that go on for miles and miles, no flickery electric lights. Working on a farm has a clear routine. I’d be a badass at spinning cloth or churning butter because I find endless repetition soothing rather than boring.

I’m not trying to romanticise the past because I know it was hard, dirty work with a constant risk of premature death. I don’t actually want to be a 16th century farmer! What I’m saying is that disability exists in the context of the environment. Our environment isn’t making people autistic in the sense of some chemical causing brain damage. But we have created a modern environment which is hostile to autistic people in many ways, which effectively makes us more disabled. When you make people more disabled, you start to see more people struggling, failing at school because they’re overwhelmed, freaking out at the sound of electric hand dryers and so on. And suddenly it looks like there’s millions more autistic people than existed before.

“…disability exists in the context of the environment.”

Reblog for disability commentary.

That last paragraph is absolutely important.

@dangerously-human

Can I also say, that my local hospital works with the special education department at the high schools in the area and trains students with autism to work cleaning and prepping surgery rooms after graduation. The hospital has found that people with autism make the rooms cleaner than those without and are able to ensure every instrument is in the exact spot it needs to be for surgery. People with autism have great attention to detail and can replicate the same task with exact precision. People with disabilities have skills that none of the rest of us have and should be valued. We would be a lot better off if society embraced these skills instead of assuming that people with autism will live less valuable lives or have nothing to offer. Just like these skills used to have a place in society, they still can.

as ur friendly Neighborhood Nursing Student™ i feel somewhat compelled to remind everyone with the hot weather:

  1. every liquid except sea water and alcohol hydrates you. It’s not CHUG WATER OR DIE. in fact, gatorade and the like are designed to hydrate you efficiently.
  2. yeah, this includes coffee and tea and soda. the diuretic is not enough to cancel out the liquid. juices and milk have solids in them, sure, but they’re also mostly liquid! it counts.
  3. your body can only absorb so much water at a time, so chugging 64 oz of water at noon and calling it good will do a wonderful job of flushing your kidneys, but not so much of hydrating your tissues. it’s more important that you’re getting consistent fluid throughout the day.
  4. there’s a lot of fancy ways to determine How Much Water (Liquid) I Should Drink but honestly? 8 oz (1 cup) every other hour on cool days and 8 oz every hour on hot days should be fine (assuming you sleep for a normal amount of time per day…. i’m assuming ur awake 16 hours a day.)
  5. figure out how many oz each of ur favorite cups is. it’ll help your guesstimation.
  6. if ur urine is darker than light yellow, you’re dehydrated.
  7. if u pinch the skin on the back of ur hand for a couple seconds and it takes more than a second or two go to back to normal then ur dehydrated.

In regards to #1, don’t take this as an excuse to drink the sugar water that they call sports drinks. They aren’t bad for you per se, but please choose water.

actually this entire post was written in the spirit of ppl using it as an excuse to drink sports drinks and soda etc

ppl have been commenting abt sodium levels in soda and sugar levels in sports drinks and thats all well and good but what i’ve noticed is that people who internalize “well, ONLY WATER hydrates me” but who HATE WATER remain horrifically dehydrated cause they dont drink anything.

so like. if ur a person who haaaaates tap water, this is absolutely me giving you permission to drink whatever fluid you can stomach. please take this as a direct excuse to drink nothing but gatorade if that’s what it takes to get enough fluid into ur body.

it’s not the healthiest for you, sure, but you’re a smart enough person to know that. please drink fluids anyways.

if u like water thats gr8. if you can stomach water that’s gr8. if you can’t, that’s okay too, and you need to stay hydrated just as much as anyone else, so please drink.

I used to hate tap water, and in some places (looking at you, Iowa) it is legit disgusting, but one thing I do which helped a ton and was long term cheaper than buying soda or juice was to get a bottle of Angostura bitters. It’s a cocktail additive with a strong distinctive flavor, so although a tiny bottle is like $6 it will last you for ages. Put a small drop or dash in your glass then fill with water. It has a pleasant sort of herbal metal taste (I understand that those words don’t seem like they should go together but it’s hard to describe) which masks tap water. It also helps me smooth an upset tummy but your mileage may vary. It’s not something that will get you drunk, just a flavoring like vanilla extract.

If that all sounds like too much bother, dropping a lemon wedge into water also helps.

I am learning that lemon wedges are magical in almost everything I like to drink.

here is the magic that made me stop being chronically dehydrated:

because yeah, i can’t STAND plain water – it tastes like the inside of my mouth. it tastes like spit. imagine drinking a glass of ice cold spit. ugh. but add a squirt of this stuff to your glass of tapwater, and now it tastes like apple, cherry, lemonade, whatever.

i also got a bunch of these

and pre-prep them with flavored water, iced tea, iced coffee, whatever (or ask my helper to do it), and then when i’m thirsty but distracted and want to just grab some kind of liquid without thinking about finding a clean glass etc., i can just grab one of these.

because yeah, hating water is a thing, and dehydration SUCKS. so drink SOMETHING, don’t be a water purist. better to chug iced coffee than go without.

mio was a damn genius for comin out with that shit

can I just speak up here as someone who has been a nurse for 17 years? I heartily endorse this post and also give you permission to DRINK WHATEVER THE HELL IT TAKES TO KEEP YOU FROM BEING DEHYDRATED

especially in the summer, you can’t play around with that. drink something. seriously. for the love of kittens. DRINK SOMETHING.

If for whatever reason you don’t like that MiO stuff, I know for a fact that Crystal Light and some generic store brands also make small flavor packets as well. Many of them are only five calories and contain zero sugar, so great alternatives.

Sparkling Ice drinks are also a great option. Zero calories, zero sugar, and lots of fruity flavors to choose from. They’re perfect if you’re like me and wanna cut down on soda but also trick your fool brain into feeling like you’re drinking one. Some places overcharge but I know at least at my Target they go for about $1, and sometimes go on sale for even less!

If you do like water but your tap water is gross, buy one of the Brita filters that screws onto the tap. Boom. Good water, zero effort.

Some light in the darkness that is Gaming news right now

gaming is SO IMPORTANT for so many disabled people (myself included).  There’s not many hobbies that have the range of interactivity and engagement that gaming has, while still being something someone can do with little movement or motor control.

I’ve met a few people who were very disapproving of my gaming hobby (was literally told to “go read a book” in a snooty way by one of them) and it frustrates heck out of me that they can’t see how important and fun gaming can be.  Gaming isn’t passive like a lot of other hobbies recommended for disabled folks.  Gaming is something to get pumped about and something that you can get better at!  You can improve your gaming skills and feel accomplished!

if it weren’t for video games I would be a much, much more unhappy and unfulfilled person.

This is why its SO important to make gaming accessible to disabled people.

This new ‘trend’ of strobing when hit [Destiny/Assassins’ Creed to name a few] is very detrimental to anyone with a seizure disorder that is effected by strobing. A lot of people with motor disorders often have visual disorders too.

Developers really need to make flashy visual effects optional or toggled on/off in menus; not left as a fixed point.

Gaming is SO important to help with my motor skills and comprehension skills and making it inaccessible to some audiences is really detrimental.

^^^Really important commentary

video games are sometimes the only thing that will help keep me sane.

I’m crying : ’ ). Videogames are important for all ages and degrees of abled people. My grandma definitely has kept a somewhat sharp mind since she plays golden sun and pokemon feverishly, though apparently she was stuck at the Sky Pillar in Ruby for two months (arthritis problems).

i just wish we could get more games that relied less on violence and fighting but Diablo fuckin rules and i’m so glad this person found a way to make it work for them.

we need to make sure all the disabled have the tools and support they need to live the lives they want to.

There is a charity called Able Gamers that helps people with varying disabilities and gives them the chance to play video games. They work both with caregivers, gamers themselves and video game developers (both indie and mainstream)to help make video games more accessible on a software level as well as through assistive technology like Ken here is using. I urge everyone to check them out and donate if possible or spread the word about their foundation!

The AbleGamers Charity

do you guys wanna see how bs ‘’’bmi’’’ is?

let’s start with a few pictures of my body shall we

(please ignore messy room i’m in the process of packing)

okay so that’s the body of someone that eats healthy, literally my fave food is broccoli, and i work out 5 days a week, you’d think i’m at ‘’’healthy weight’’’’ right?????

BITCH NOPE

that bitch telling me to eat 1500 – 1900 calories a day are you fucking joking??? that’s fucking starving myself and i’m not doing that. fuck you.

Bmi was never meant to be used for individuals; it’s only useful for talking in generalised terms about a large population and as a potential guide.

thank you for your input, not many people know that. but still, an official site such as the fucking nhs recommending a full grown woman to eat under 2,000 a day is not okay!!! (Especially considering the fact that it took into account my regular activity)

calories are bullshit too

a calorie is the amount of energy released in laboratory conditions to heat water when it’s burned

so in the lab you have an instrument to burn the food and you measure how much of it it takes to heat water a set amount,

this does not in any way reflect how the body works

your body breaks down foods in different ways, for example monosaturated fats break down very slowly but processed sugars break down very fast

so by that logic something that is almost pure carbohydrate would be much worse than something that is almost pure monosaturated fat

not necessarily

oats, for example, are something like 95% fibre, meaning although they are pure sugar the body decides it’s not worth the bother of breaking them down so you get a small fraction of the sugar in the oat

so just going by carbohydrate [aka sugar] content doesn’t work properly either

a stick of butter has WAY more calories than a boiled potato but the stick of butter breaks down over several hours and keeps you satiated longer than that boiled potato that immediately floods your system with sugar, that triggers the response of too much store that for later, which causes a lack in your body which triggers the i’m hungry response

or the peanuts being high protein high fat are the reason why a snickers fills you up longer than a mars bar even though it might have a higher calorie count – because you’re full longer you eat less calories because you don’t go i’m hungry and eat another mars bar

and that’s all assuming that every body processes food the exact same way

tl:dr the human body is a very complicated machine and using a very simple method of measuring energy intake is complete nonsense

i always knew the BMI was bullshit but having solid proof is reassuring and will def help with my recovery!!!

BMI is bullshit and I’m so mad the medical community is still using it

I’m a varsity athlete (rugby, so let’s keep in mind i throw myself at other human beings who are often bigger than me) and my BMI is always ‘overweight’ except for the brief period last summer in which i was eating about 1300 calories a day to make myself hot (12/10 would not recommend).  right now my butt looks great, and I’m probably in the best shape ive ever been in.  muscle weighs more than fat.  BMI does not factor in body composition, which is a much better indication f health.  also beauty standards at totally unattainable so.  I’m 5′2″ and weigh more than most 6ft models because of the amount of muscle mass i carry and sure I’m a little squishy round the edges but I’m healthy. so BMI can kiss my ass

This post is so good, so pure, so important

Adding on to all of this up here, hormones play a significant role in fat storage. “Eat less and exercise more” is a fad diet. Losing fat, gaining fat, and maintaining weight has far more to do with hormonal composition in your body than anything. Change your hormonal composition, and your body’s fat distribution is subject to change. This is why dfab people often gain weight when undergoing menopause or after having a hysterectomy (gender confirmation surgeries typically excluded as the subjects are often on testosterone). This is why endocrine disorders are often associated with significant weight loss or weight gain.

Another example of the BMI being bullshit: many professional athletes have very low percentages of body fat while also having a high BMI.

Joe Rogan is considered obese by the BMI, regardless of his low body fat percentage.

Some more examples of actual Olympians:

The BMI is bullshit

The BMI bullshit sets kids (particularly girls) up for eating disorders early on. Dieting destroys the metabolism and actually tends to CAUSE weight gain in the long run, because the body thinks its starving.

Doctors focusing on weight to the exclusion of all else also means that real health issues are missed, both in fat people and thin people. A perfectly health fat person may be pushed by their doctor to lose weight because vague future health threat. Meanwhile, health problems in thin people may be missed because they are assumed to be healthy due to their body type.

Fuck the BMI.

Treat the patient, not the chart.

So I’m 5’7” and have stayed at roughly 160 lbs since my pregnancy. I’m definitely overweight, probably obese according to the BMI. My doctor (an adorable little Ecuadorian guy who must’ve been like a koala in another life) keeps an eye on my blood work, but praises me for being “a very healthy person”. The first time he said that, I was shocked. Wasn’t he going to say I could stand to lose some weight? Nope, he said, my blood work reflected a healthy body. And that’s the way it should be.

Oh my god, food extract is not the same as an essential oil.

Food extract is the flavoring of something cooked down into a carrier oil or alcohol that is safe for human ingestion.

Essential oil is the pure extract of the plant refined down and distilled for concentrated medicinal purposes to a significantly higher strength than simply adding ground up mint leaves to your water. The two are not comparable in any way.

Cinnamon extract and cinnamon essential oil are not the same thing.

One is about 100 times the strength of the other and can also cause acute organ failure. I’ll give you a hint, it’s not the food extract.

Sweet gods I’m not trying to be mean, I want you to be aware and safe and stop putting yourselves and others at risk. Please.

Like maybe my tone is hard to read, maybe it just comes off as really angry but it’s not, it’s fear and worry. I read posts and clutch my head in alarm going “no! No! That’s how people die!” And then I get exasperated because a bunch of people not formally qualified chime in with “um actually this is a lie” and it’s not, it’s really, really not.

I’m not some big pharma advocate. I’m a crunchy witch hippy just like you with salt rock lamps and rose quartz all over my house. I just happen to have spent the last 15 years of my life studying the actual science of holistic medicines and I’m trying to help you not get hurt (or worse) becuase you trusted a sales person with no idea what the ever loving hell they were talking about beyond a sales pitch designed to maximize profit. Gah.

I see this so often in the Mommy world. There was a lady not long ago in one of the mom groups who was really worried about her toddler. He’d had a persistent cough for weeks and the doctor couldn’t figure out why. Someone asked, well what have to tried to treat it with, so far? She said she was using a humidifier, honey, and eucalyptus EO in the shower every night.

Yeah.

In case you were wondering, eucalyptus can cause respiratory distress in young children.

Sadly I don’t wonder. I have a friend whose daughter died from a home made menthol oil chest rub. She wasn’t even ten yet, but her mom– a qualified aromatherapist– thought she’d be old enough to handle it. She went into respitory distress and died seizing in her mother’s arms on route to the hospital. It was one of the most harrowing stories I had to listen to during my holistic training. She stood up there, on this podium next to a bunch of ponzy scheme essential oil sellers who looked like they wanted the floor to swallow them, and said “I killed my child with good intentions”.

I’ll never forget the look on her face.

So to reiterate, children under the age of ten should not be directly exposed to things like eucalyptus oil, peppermint or wintergreen. If you are using such things in your house and your child starts to complain of headaches, lethargy and general “feel worse”, don’t just assume it’s the cold/flu. Those are all signs of menthol sensitivity and they only get worse with increased exposure. Ventilate the room, take them outside if you can until the air clears. Do not apply again.

Rapid onset wheezing may be a sign of allergic reaction or possible asthma attack triggered by the menthol too. If they tell you their chest is warm or fuzzy when you use it, that’s another sign it’s not going down well with them. Again, ventilate the area or remove anything you applied to them. Administer inhalers if necessary. Watch for any more labored breathing or if they suddenly go limp or you can’t wake them up. If they do call 911.

This can also apply to people with allergies and asthma who are otherwise healthy.

One of the safest, natural ways to alleviate congestion is with just pure good old fashioned warm steam. Keep the air moist, drink plenty of warm fluids. Menthol can help relieve the feeling of congestion, but there’s limited evidence to suggest it actually clears the airways. And for the love of god don’t inhale mustard or horseradish (I’ve seen that suggestion on posts too, though how you’d get those oils I don’t know). That’s literally what tear gas is made of.

Be wary of essential oils on pets too. Lots of that shit is highly toxic to a kitty.

This incredible invention is keeping girls in school

For Trinitas Kunashe, like many girls in Malawi, getting her period was unexpected, unexplained and a burden for her everyday life. Often, girls who do not have access to pads prefer to stay home and out of school for the duration of their periods.

But Trinitas is changing that with her amazing new invention:

Made from bright and comfortable locally-sourced fabrics, Tina Pads are a hit amongst girls in her community. They are waterproof, practical and fun – and most importantly reusable.
