Petition to sit down all the people who make coma theories about Adventure Time and tell them “listen, this fucking show is about the last human living in a post-apocalyptic world where deadly magic has been reawakened following a global thermonuclear war that wiped out the rest of the human species, how much fucking darker do you want it to be”
Even though I thought my first Creative Writing professor was kind of a douche, he made a good point about this. One of our first assignments was to write in this eerie, otherworldly style (we were mimicking a specific author whose name escapes me), so we had to write about eerie otherworldly things happening. It’s no exaggeration to say that more than half the class had a “big reveal” where we find out that the story’s strange events and themes are all in the mind of some person in an insane asylum, or someone having a drug trip.
My professor said something like, “you just successfully wrote a world that feels separate from our own, but got frightened last minute and shoe-horned in normalcy. You showed that you were afraid to commit to something different and interesting.” Though I’m typically a contrarian and a piece of garbage, I am inclined to agree with my professor. I feel like people who write coma theories and the like are afraid to accept that the world of the story is separate from our own. They like everything wrapped up in this crazy little realism box where nothing out of the ordinary happens in fiction.

This pretty well hits the nail on the head as to why I generally hate coma/dream theories and people who think they’re so fucking deep for coming up with it. In my book it’s LAZY, plain and simple.
I think the only times I can think of where “It was all a dream” really works are in pieces like Over the Garden Wall, Ink, Coraline, and Mirrormask. In all of those, the characters ‘wake up’ again in their ‘normal’ world, but there’s a very strong implication that the dream world is as real, if not more so, than the ‘real’ world, and the things they did in the dream world had a very direct impact on the waking world– not in an “I’m gonna be a better person” sense, but literally who lives and who dies at the end of the story.
Notably, in most of those, it’s stated flat-out within the first couple of minutes that the character in question is dreaming. It’s not a big reveal, it’s a fundamental detail of the setting.
If you’re gonna do a dreamworld, actually commit to doing a dreamworld.
I think we, as a general community, need to start taking this little moment more seriously.
This, right here? This is asking for consent. It’s a legal necessity, yes, but it is also you, the reader, actively consenting to see adult content; and in doing so, saying that you are of an age to see it, and that you’re emotionally capable of handling it.
You find the content you find behind this warning disgusting, horrifying, upsetting, triggering? You consented. You said you could handle it, and you were able to back out at any time. You take responsibility for yourself when you click through this, and so long as the creator used warnings and tags correctly, you bear full responsibility for its impact on you.
“Children are going to lie about their age” is probably true, but that’s the problem of them and the people who are responsible for them, not the people that they lie to.
If you’re not prepared to see adult content, created by and for adults, don’t fucking click through this. And if you do, for all that’s holy, don’t blame anyone else for it.

First of all we have Tavros preventing Gamzeecalypse simply by throwing him off the rage game right into love limbo and all thanks to got-brought-back-to-life-by-Terezi confidence!
Then we have Feferi, who decided that Green Sun is a great opportunity to have beach party and Gamzee happily complied, as always! Murderstuck completely avoided and all thanks to Terezi-and-John-bringing-back-Feferi-to-life-movement!
Of course, it’s not like it stopped srs pale GamKars from happening, I mean, why should it??? Karkat never stood a chance against Gamzee-not-being-bad-thanks-to-Terezi-thinking-it-out-properly!
And because Terezi-thought-Eridan-deserved-a-second-chance-cause-this-would-only-be-just, Eridan gets to shine as a quadrant and history nerd! Also, don’t you think it’s a perfect situation for Rose to learn how to auspisticize?
And man, it was obvious that Terezi was going to bring Nepeta back to life so she can finally bond with her non-F4C3T1OUSLY and wow, can you see this helping Nepeta bring shipping out of the shadows and getting over her Vantas crush at the same time???
Then, there’s Sollux. Welp, shit happens when you make blind dude stay around. Guess it’s no big deal since he didn’t mean to and without drama Rose might see it as a wake up call from fate.
Almost forgot about this one! Look how happy Gamzee seems to be, like for the first or second time in his life probably! And he is bonding with Kurloz! Yay, finally bonding with dancestors!
Oh man, and then there’s Equius utilizing his fi%ing skills and helping alphas with prototyping properly! Aren’t you glad Terezi and John brought Equius back to life since it’s not his fault society messed up his head and his death was a result of that?
Some more Equius knowing what is he doing (oh, and there’s Vriska’s head too, I wonder what’s up with that).
And then there’s like Fedorasprite (FedoraPipesprite anyone???) helping guide Jane to her Dad and Kanaya seeing herself having a makeover done in another timeline and wow, aren’t you glad Terezi brought back to life everyone whose death seemed to be UNJUST.
Cause imagine what if she brought back to life only one character and that character would act like if whatever it did actually fixed everything thanks to its overgrown ego and what if it would steal other’s characters plots and character development and possible outcomes and–

I’m going to speak primarily as a fanfic writer for this fandom, but one of the most important things that has happened to me in this fandom is a certain review I received on Butterfly Kisses and Narcissus, where a Jimin stan told me they loved my portrayal of him. Mind you, BK&N was my first-ever attempt at a long, serious BTS fic – so at the time, I was very nervous and still quite uncertain about how I was writing the boys’ personalities. Jimin, as it was, ended up being very sassy and a tad sardonic, even if a caring and sweet person at heart, because up until then that was the vibe I’d gotten from him IRL. And the Jimin stan loved it!! They explained to me that Jimin tends to get either hypersexualized or hyperinfantilized, both in fic portrayals and in person, and that just…stuck with me. Especially once I really started delving into the fandom and saw how just true that is.
Listen. Jimin is one of the most interesting people I can ever base a character off of. He’s so multifaceted; he’s fiercely passionate yet so very thoughtful, kind and caring yet pretty freaking temperamental. (Don’t believe me on that? The other members have rated Jimin no. 1 as “Most Terrifying When Angry.” That speaks for itself.) And there are sooo many fics/AUs/people out there who present him as just this thing to protect, to coo over or to screw. It’s insulting, it’s dehumanizing, and worse, it turns the real-life Jimin – a breathing, thinking person who, you know, has autonomy to his own actions and body – into a literal object so that stuff like what OP describes is outright normalized within our fandom. If you fantasize about him like that, sure. Whatever. But you know, Jimin is a wonderful human being, a fascinating personality to put on paper, and I’m tired of people turning into just some sort of doll to baby over. At some point, I think you have to realize that sending him lewd comments or squealing about how cute he is when this guy’s trying to connect with us about his health, feelings, and dreams is a little bit much.
EDIT: And just to put this out there, because this also needs to be said: you can say he’s sexy/cute/etc. Jimin knows he’s a sexy dude and the effect he has on ARMY. That’s a given, like of course. But there IS a point where you should actually consider about reining it back, especially when certain fans start taking this flanderization of Jimin being nothing more than a Sexual Being seriously. Fantasizing about him is one thing. Objectifying him until he becomes your mental sex toy, where all you see when you look at Jimin is a doll, is…quite another matter entirely.
We could’ve seen Nepeta be a cute little badass warrior who bonds with the kids and develops some cute relationships with them.
We could’ve seen Equius grow out of his bigoted upbringing and recognize the caste system was bullshit and at least be a bit less of an ass, with Nepeta helping in that.
We could’ve seen Eridan atone for everything he’s done and do everything he could to make amends with everyone he’s hurt, admitting he was just lonely and scared and worried that he wouldn’t matter once his quadrants and the caste system disappeared.
We could’ve seen Feferi look at Beforus and how her new empire would’ve really affected the troll’s culture, and decide that instead of her benevolent prejudice she would learn to work toward actual equality among the trolls. We could’ve also seen her interact with her Dancestor and the stark contrast in their respective personalities, while seeing her have an intense battle against the Condesce.
We could’ve seen Tavros actually become confident or fully realize he always had a sense of self-worth all along (he’s literally never apologized for liking fairies or FLARPing or bad freeform rap, I think that says a lot), watch him actually heal from the abuse Vriska put him through instead of develop Stockholm Syndrome and continue to be shat on by her or get turned into a being that’s forever triggering his allergies.
We could’ve seen Karkat actually succeed as a leader, unite the trolls and overcome his insecurities about his mutant blood color.
