aspects of emotionally abusive parent/child relationships that i still can’t believe they included in tangled:
gothel appearing genuinely sweet and caring at times, enough to possibly even confuse the audience
the mumbling: just having that tiny insignificant little thing be something that gothel consistently, for no discernible reason, gets pissed about
having a special “i love you” exchange: seriously like idk if this is common but i had the same sort of thing with my abusive dad and the first time they said the whole “i love you more” “i love you most” thing i was like holy SHIT
when gothel says “oh great, now i’m the bad guy”: i cannot stress enough that 100% of the time any parent who complains about being the bad guy is abusive
and then later when she’s like “you want me to be the bad guy? fine” as if rapunzel’s making her do all this by not wanting to be locked up forever
when rapunzel tells pascal “shh, don’t let her see you”: why wouldn’t gothel want rapunzel to have a pet?? they never explain that, but they don’t need to, because of course she won’t allow rapunzel to have this harmless thing that makes her happy
rapunzel having an entire sequence where she struggles with finally feeling free and happy and also thinking that makes her a terrible person because her mother wouldn’t like it
I want to write a fic where Lilo goes to college and her roommate is Boo from Monsters Inc. Boo is the first person to think Stitch is adorable and cuddly, and Lilo is the first person not to act like “Mike Wazowski” was a weird name for a goldfish. They get on like a house on fire which is kind of bad for Nani’s blood pressure.
But then one night they wake up in the middle of the night because something is in their closet. And the door starts to creak open so Stitch tackles whoever (whatever) is in there. They fall back into the closet, the door slams shut… and when Lilo runs over and opens it there’s nothing but an empty closet.
Then Boo tells Lilo all about this weird thing that happened to her when she was a kid, and how no one ever believed her but she knows it was real.Â
And cue Lilo and Boo busting into the Monster world to rescue Stitch and wreaking mad havoc in the process.
SEE THIS IS A WORTHY SEQUEL
This needs to happen
Petition for the movie to be hand-drawn in Lilo and Stitch’s style when they’re in the human world, and computer animated once they go through the door into the monster world.
great now i have cancer because that was not the story of ANY of them. at all.
But I mean, Rapunzel said “Do people ASSUME” before all that. I thought that was a take that towards the ones who always miss the point of Disney princesses and say that they’re bad role models cause they “needed a man.”
“assume” is the key word that so many people seem to overlook here
Yeah I thought that was more of a jab at the radfem and feminist types that consider Disney princesses to be bad role models for girls because of reliance on men to solve their problems rather than a jab at men specifically because Disney creates well developed male characters as well.
An appreciation post of the Mothers & mother figures of these Disney & Dreamworks animated characters. Wishing a Happy Mother’s Day to all the mummies around the world! ~ ❤
